Essay: Developing an Appreciation of Training Implications
2005
Rishi Gupta, University of British Columbia
"ISIS is like an umbrella research organization bringing together great minds and incorporating the most innovative technologies in civil engineering. Writing this essay has definitely brought out a deeper sense of gratitude and thankfulness associated with ISIS."
2004
Ved Prakash Sharma, University of Alberta
"I have not an iota of doubt in saying that the Networks of Centres of Excellence is a specially formulated win-win recipe founded on a sound platform, housed in a resourceful environment, and nurtured in caring skillful hands."
2003
1st Place: Nadeem Khattak, University of Alberta
"As a student affiliate of ISIS, I have gained immensely from the overall learning environment provided by this center of excellence. Opportunities to conduct research as well as present in annual conferences and workshops while gaining from the networking of similar professionals has only enriched and polished my experience here as a student at the University of Alberta."
2nd Place: Keith Aguilera, University of Toronto
"...the concept of hundreds of researchers across Canada being connected by a common thread and driven by similar goals finally put my research into perspective. It was no longer just a project conducted within the confines of a structural lab; it became the launch pad for me to be able to define my own goals and aspirations as a civil engineer."
2002 (two students tied for first place)
Vaibhav Banthia, University of Manitoba
"The ISIS/NCE program benefits young researchers, like me, by linking them to industry and business, enabling them to gain valuable experience and skills for the new economy because our thinking broadens and we incorporate new ideas into our projects."
Nadine Ibrahim, University of Toronto
(also 1st Place Presentation)
"I have come a long way in such a short while, and I am honoured to be a part of a prestigious group of people at ISIS Canada, who are dedicated to their research and are forward thinking. In the process, I found the confidence and courage to embark on my own research aspirations."
2001
1st Place: Ahmed Debaiky, Queen's University
"My involvement with ISIS Canada has twice presented me with opportunities for further achievements. On one occasion, I was approached by an editor of the highly regarded magazine "Reinforced Plastics" after my presentation at the 39th SAMPE Conference in Long Beach, California. The magazine later published most of the work presented in their issue of September 1999. On a second occasion, my presentation at the ACMBS-III Conference had an overwhelming attendance and response. It resulted in an invitation for future collaboration with NORUT Technologies Ltd., Navrik, Norway, offered by the Managing Director Dr. Geir Horrigmore."
2nd Place: Brea Williams, Queen's University
(also
1st Place Presentation)
"The four years I have worked in the ISIS Network have proven to be a great benefit to my research, networking and career opportunities. In addition to enhancing student work, ISIS has contributed positively to Canadian infrastructure since its initiation in 1995. Not only does ISIS strongly influence civil engineering, its mandate has far-reaching effects for students and the public at large."
