Gary Bosgoed Scholarship for Aboriginals in Engineering
$5,000 Scholarship
ISIS Canada (Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures) offers an annual scholarship of $5,000 for Aboriginal people enrolled in engineering. The scholarship is awarded in an effort to increase the number of Canadian Aboriginal engineers and scientists. ISIS Canada's goal is to complement the scholarship with leadership training in preparation for a successful engineering or science career. The ISIS Canada scholarship recognizes academic merit. However, equal emphasis is given to the recipient's demonstrated passion for learning and community involvement.
Do I qualify? Yes, if you are a Canadian Aboriginal (First Nations, Metis or Inuit). You are an undergraduate or graduate student and have been accepted to or are attending a Canadian university in a discipline related to ISIS Canada's research and plan to continue your studies under the direction of an ISIS Project Leader. Alternatively, as an undergraduate, you may use the scholarship toward summer employment as a research assistant for an ISIS Project Leader. You do not qualify if you are graduating in the current year and not continuing your studies in September, or if you are a past recipient of this scholarship.

ISIS researchers are seeking solutions to the problems associated with the deterioration of steel reinforced concrete as well as developing fibre optic sensing technologies that will allow engineers to monitor structures from remote locations. ISIS Canada is a Networks of Centres of Excellence program funded in part by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, as well as provincial governments, universities and the private sector. It is a multidisciplinary team of over 250 researchers located in 14 universities across Canada. Its award-winning research encompasses civil, mechanical, materials, photonics and electrical engineering.
What are the areas of expertise? Over 40 research projects to be conducted in 2006/07 encompass:
Fibre Reinforced Polymers - that are up to 6 times stronger than steel, one-fifth the weight, non-corrosive and immune to electro-magnetic fields. By using FRP to reinforce concrete, the problem of corroding steel reinforcements and crumbling infrastructure will be eliminated.
Structural Health Monitoring - using fibre optic sensors which are embedded in the structure and enable remote monitoring. This is a new non-intrusive way to monitor the impact of traffic and excess loads, long-term structural health, structural components rehabilitated with FRP, and how structures react to earthquakes and vibrations.
How do I apply? Send us a letter indicating which scholarship you are applying for, what field of research you intend to study and the ISIS Project Leader (Research Professor) with whom you will be associated. Include a brief resumé of your accomplishments, interests, and plans for the future, as well as all your post-secondary academic transcripts and two letters of reference (one of these should be from your ISIS Project Leader). There is no application form to accompany this information.
What is the deadline? Applications must be received no later than March 31, 2008. The deadline for the Urs Meier Scholarship for Engineering Excellence is November 1, 2007.
Announcement and Provision of Funds
Applicants are advised that the successful candidates will be announced at the Spring Annual ISIS Conference. However, funds will not be released until verification has been provided that the recipient is enrolled for further studies and a letter of endorsement is provided by the ISIS Project Leader under whose direction the research will be conducted.
