ISIS Poster Competition

Once again, a highlight of the Annual Conference 2009 in Toronto will be the student poster competition. A large room will be provided to display the posters, and appropriate time will be scheduled during the Conference for viewing and judging. All delegates will be involved in the judging process. Students are expected to be at their poster location during coffee breaks to describe their research program during the first day of the conference. However, students are requested not to be at their posters for explanatory reasons on the second day of the conference.

Prizes ($250, $150, $100) will be awarded for the top three posters displayed at the conference.

Poster Specifications
  • The Conference organizing committee is requesting that a poster be displayed for every research project conducted in the Network this year. The competition is open to students, post-docs, research associates and technicians. Project Leaders are not eligible to participate. Each project is limited to one poster, so a collaborative effort is encouraged where appropriate.
  • Size must be 2 feet x 3 feet, landscape or portrait. Oversized posters will be disqualified.
  • Posters can be laminated but should not be mounted on foam core or poster board, because all posters will be secured to a display board using pushpins.
  • Photographs, charts, graphs, illustrations, text, and/or three-dimensional objects may be incorporated. However, photographs of students, research personnel or Project Leaders are not allowed.
  • Leave a 3-inch x 3-inch blank space in lower right hand corner for ISIS staff to affix a poster number at the time of the Conference.
  • Contestants should remember that the function of a poster is to convey your message at a glance. Headings and subheadings are all the text you need. Displays having pages of descriptive text do not constitute a poster and will be judged accordingly.

Project Leaders are reminded that every student is encouraged to be involved in poster preparation, either individually or in a group. Please provide the following information to Mark Green (greenm@civil.queensu.ca) by Friday, April 3, 2009 for each project:

  • Name of Project Leader
  • Project number of each poster to be displayed
  • Names of students who participated in preparation of the posters
  • Names of students who will be at the Conference to present each poster

(The requirement is to have one poster only for every funded research project, where it is appropriate to do so in the opinion of the Project Leader.)

Concours d'affiche

Le concours d'affiche d’étudiant sera encore une fois un point culminant de la Conférence annuelle 2009 d'ISIS Canada qui se tiendra à Toronto. Une grande salle d'exposition lui sera consacrée, et du temps sera accordé pendant la Conférence pour le visionnement et le jugement. Tous les délégués seront impliqués dans le processus de jugement. On s'attend à ce que les étudiants se tiennent avec leur affiche pendant les pauses-café le premier jour de la Conférence pour décrire leur programme de recherche. Au cours des journées 2 et 3, cependant, ils ne seront plus tenus de s'y trouver.

Des prix seront attribués pour les trois meilleures affiches exposées à la conférence ($250, $150, $100).

Caractéristiques des affiches

Le Comité d’organisateur de la Conférence demande qu'une affiche soit exposée pour chacun des projets de recherche menés par le réseau au cours de la présente année.  Le concours est ouvert aux étudiants, aux chercheurs postdoctoraux, aux adjoints de recherche et aux techniciens.  Les directeurs de projets ne sont pas admissibles.  Chaque projet ne peut présenter qu'une seule affiche si bien que l'effort collectif est encouragé, lorsque possible.

L'affiche sera de format portrait ou paysage, et devra mesurer 2 pi x 3 pi.  Les affiches surdimensionnées seront disqualifiées.

Les affiches pourront être laminées, mais elles ne doivent pas être montées sur des supports de bois ou de mousse, car elles seront fixées aux présentoirs d'exposition au moyen de punaises.

Les affiches pourront contenir des photos, des tableaux, des graphiques, des illustrations, des textes et/ou des objets en trois dimensions.  Toutefois, les photographies montrant des étudiants, du personnel de recherche ou des directeurs de projets sont interdites.

Veuillez laisser un espace vide de 3 po x 3 po dans le coin inférieur droit de l'affiche afin que le personnel d'ISIS puisse y inscrire le numéro qui lui sera assigné au moment de la Conférence.

Les concurrents doivent se rappeler que l'affiche a pour fonction de transmettre leur message au premier coup d'oeil.  Le texte devrait donc se limiter à quelques titres et sous-titres.  Les affiches montrant des pages de texte descriptif ne peuvent pas être considérées comme des affiches et seront jugées en conséquence.

On rappelle aux directeurs de projets que chaque étudiant est encouragé à s’impliquer dans la préparation d'affiche, soit individuellement ou soit avec un groupe. Veuillez fournir les informations suivantes à Mark Green (greenm@civil.queensu.ca) d’ici vendredi le 3 avril 2009 pour chaque projet :

  • Le nom du directeur de projets
  • Le numéro du projet de chacune des affiches présentées
  • Le nom des étudiants ayant participé à la préparation des affiches
  • Le nom des étudiants qui seront à la Conférence pour présenter chaque affiche

(Selon les exigences, il devrait y avoir une seule affiche pour chaque projet de recherche subventionné,  lorsque le directeur de projets le juge à propos.)
