Theme 6 (1999-2002):
Design Aids and Initiatives for Future Projects

Director: Research Management Committee

PROJECTS IN THEME 6

Theme 6 was comprised of two important components. The first was to enhance the implementation of ISIS Canada technology into industry by the provision of user manuals and design aids, and securing appropriate approvals in design guidelines, codes and standards. The second was to facilitate the development and initiation of new concepts and new initiatives for future demonstration projects.

In order to use ISIS technology on infrastructure projects, design engineers must have design aids, manuals and codes. It is not just a matter of having the appropriate guidelines for the use of new materials and design concepts. The issues of public safety and professional liability are involved. Although it was always anticipated that such design aids and guidelines would be one of the components of technology transfer, a pressing need emerged in the design sector for ISIS Canada to advance this part of the program. Consequently, the preparation of design aids and manuals was carried out within this new Theme, commencing in April 1998.

The second component of Theme 6 involved new initiatives for future projects, as a result of experience gained over the initial years of the ISIS program. It had become patently clear that two circumstances should be accommodated. One was the need to lever NCE funds to establish new demonstration projects, since it is often easier to get other funding parties involved if the project is already partially funded. The other circumstance was related to further expanding the horizons of the ISIS Canada research program to meet the long term goals of the Network mandate.

While it was recognized that specific benefits were unlikely to flow directly from the activities in Theme 6, the new Theme provided design aids which facilitated the transfer of technology and thereby made it possible for economic benefits to be realized from all the other themes. The output from this Theme in the form of manuals and codes expedited the process of technology transfer and gave Canadians the opportunity to reap the benefits of the ISIS Network in the shortest time frame feasible.
