Background

Initially, ISIS Canada was granted four years of funding by the federal government Networks of Centres of Excellence program (NCE), from September, 1995 to March 31, 1999.  This is referred to as Phase 1 (1995 to 1999).  A list of projects and themes carried out within this phase is included herein.

In 1998, ISIS Canada was given an opportunity to continue its mandate, subject to a mid-term review by an international expert panel.  Attached is a Progress Report dated March 1998 which outlines the research activities and success achieved and was used as part of the submission to NCE in support of continued funding.

As a result of the 1998 mid-term review, NCE funding was extended for a three-year Phase 2 (all part of the NCE 1st Funding Cycle of seven years), from April 1, 1999 to March 31, 2002.  A list of Phase 2 projects and themes are included herein.

Throughout the seven-year research program which formed part of the NCE 1st Funding Cycle, the number of themes changed, the number of projects increased dramatically, and the focus and direction of some aspects of the program shifted as the needs of the user sector evolved.

As the NCE 1st Funding Cycle was nearing completion in 2001, once again ISIS Canada was provided an opportunity to make application to the NCE for the continuation of its mandate for another seven years, with initial funding for four years.  Part of the submission to the NCE included the included Progress Report dated January 2001.

ISIS was successful in its application and commenced the NCE 2nd Funding Cycle on April 1, 2002, with funding to March 31, 2006.  Following a successful mid-term review in 2005, continued funding to 2009 was awarded.
