Dr. Leon Wegner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Geological Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. He holds a B.E. Civil, (University of Saskatchewan) 1988; an M.A.Sc. Civil, (Technical University of Nova Scotia) 1993; and a Ph.D. Structural Mechanics and Materials, (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) 1997.

His research interests fall into two broad categories: the use of experimental, analytical, and numerical modeling techniques to understand the thermal and mechanical properties of composite materials on the basis of microstructural behaviours; and the use of advanced composite materials and innovative approaches to address the problems of deteriorating civil engineering structures.

Specific research projects include:

  • Finite element investigations of how changes in microstructural morphology influence the mechanical properties of interpenetrating phase composites.
  • Experimental studies to determine the flexural toughness and plastic shrinkage cracking properties of fibre-reinforced concrete incorporating natural or recycled fibres.
  • Numerical, laboratory, and field studies on the use of vibration-based damage detection for structural health monitoring of bridge structures.
  • Investigations of the behaviour and limitations of steel-free bridge decks.

Dr. Wegner is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Saskatchewan. He is a member of CSCE, ASCE, and ACI.  Dr. Wegner is a co-recipient of the CSCE’s P.L. Pratley Award for the best paper in the field of Bridge Engineering (1993).
