Dr. David Thompson graduated from Reading University (UK) with a B.Sc. in physics in 1963 and a Ph.D. in solid state physics in 1967. He worked at Westinghouse Canada from 1967 to 1972 where he was responsible for processing development in the manufacture of silicon integrated circuits. In 1973 he became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Physics at McMaster University, becoming a Full Professor in 1981. In 1981 he became Chair of the Department and in 1987 founded McMaster’s Centre for Electrophotonic Materials, where he is currently Director. In addition to his involvement in ISIS he has been a principal investigator in other Federal and Provincial Centres of Excellence (Canadian Institute for Telecommunications Research, Ontario Centre for Materials Research, Materials and Manufacturing Ontario and Photonics Research Ontario). His research interests have centered on semiconductors, specifically growth and characterization, and the fabrication and characterization of various devices. Current research activities are the growth of complex quantum well structures by molecular beam epitaxy, device processing technologies, and the fabrication of semiconductor diode lasers, photodetectors and photonic integrated systems. He has published over 200 technical articles.
