Dr. Gamil Tadros is the Structural Consultant for SPECO Engineering Ltd. and Technical Applications Consultant for ISIS Canada. As Structural Consultant, Dr. Tadros provides conceptual solutions to design and construction problems, final design, and coordination of the design team. As a Technical Applications Consultant, he provides the necessary link between the ISIS Canada Research Network and industry.
Dr. Tadros specializes in the design and analysis of bridges, large structures and other unique facilities. He has over 40 of experience in the consulting industry where he has been responsible for the design, review and inspection of more than 100 bridges, several aqueous retaining structures and several Advanced Composite Material (ACM) bridges. In addition, Dr. Tadros was the conceptual designer of the Confederation Bridge, a 13 km long structure connecting the Provinces of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
In 1994, Dr. Tadros conducted a lecture tour from coast to coast across Canada on behalf of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) of which he is an active and participating member. He is also a member of several code committees and networks in Canada and Europe including the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) Committee of the Canadian Standards Association, which has recently approved major revisions to Section 16 of the code dealing with bridge construction.
He is a member of the Board of the Advanced Composites Materials in Bridges and Structures Network of Canada and a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. He was awarded the PTI and PCA Award of Excellence for the design of N.W. LRT Bow River Bridge in Calgary, Alberta in 1987 and 1988. As well, he received the P.L. Pratley Award for best paper published in the field of Bridge Engineering in 1987. In 1996, he was selected by the Engineering News Record of New York to receive the 1996 News Maker of the Year award for his contributions to the conceptual design of the Confederation Bridge.
More recently Dr. Tadros was awarded the Gzowski Medal in 1998 for Best Paper on a civil engineering subject published in the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering. He received the A.B. Sanderson Award in 1999, an award given to a member of CSCE who has made a particularly outstanding contribution to the development and practice of structural engineering in Canada. In 2000, he received the NOVA Award from the Construction Innovation Forum as one of the members of the team of innovators who developed the steel-free concrete bridge deck. Dr. Tadros was elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2002 and received the Distinguished Professional Award from the Calgary Immigrant Aid Society in 2003.
Dr. Tadros obtained his B.Sc. from Cairo University, Egypt in 1962 and his Ph.D. at the University of Calgary in 1970. He has published and presented over 110 technical papers in journals and conferences in the field of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures and bridges.
