Dr. John Newhook is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Dalhousie University. He is a graduate of the former Technical University of Nova Scotia and has 15 years of experience in structural engineering research and consulting. His research interests are in the areas of structural health monitoring, structural analysis and design, concrete structures, bridge engineering, and the use of advanced composite materials in civil engineering applications. In the area of structural monitoring, he has considerable experience in the use of fibre optic sensing technology. Within ISIS Canada, Dr. Newhook is a Project Leader, the Project Coordinator for ISIS Field Assessment Projects and the scientific representative to the Network's Board of Directors.

Dr. Newhook is a member of the International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructures, Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers, a member of ACI Committee 440 on FRP Reinforcement for Concrete and ACI 342 Evaluation of Concrete Bridges and Concrete Bridge Elements, and a registered professional engineer.
