Dr. Pierre Labossière has been a Professor in the Département de génie civil at the Université de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Québec since 1992. Since January 2002, he has been Associate Vice-Rector, Research at the Université de Sherbrooke. He received his Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering), "A New Failure Criterion for Fibre-Reinforced Composite Laminae", from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, in 1987, his M.Sc.A. (Civil Engineering), "Analyse par éléments finis de plaques de matériaux composites", from the Université de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Québec in 1983, and his B. Ing. (Civil Engineering) from the Université de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Québec, in 1981. He has held academic positions at the University of Alberta, Université Claude-Bernard Lyon I, France, and the Université de Moncton.
His research interests are:
- Composite materials in civil engineering applications: construction and rehabilitation
of civil engineering structures, standards development, reliability, failure criteria.
- Cable domes: building, finite element simulation, behaviour under service conditions.
- Reinforced concrete: modeling and computer-assisted design.
- Innovative calculation methods applied to civil engineering design: neural networks and genetic algorithms.
He is a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), (1982- ), the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE), (1987- ), and the International Association of Bridges and Structural Engineers (IABSE), (1990- ). He has been a Project Leader with ISIS Canada since 1995, and served on the ISIS Board of Directors representing Network researchers from 1997 to 2000. He was President of the Organizing Committee for the 1997 Canadian Society for Civil Engineering Annual Conference in Sherbrooke, Québec.
