Mr. Ray Hoemsen, P. Eng. is an individual who has held numerous leadership positions in the public and private sectors, or as a volunteer in the community and his profession. As the (former) Director of Industry Liaison Office at the University of Manitoba, he was responsible for University/Industry Liaison and Technology Transfer and Commercialization and day-to-day oversight of the development of the SMARTpark at the University of Manitoba. During his recent tenure as the Vice-President/Director of Operations for the Smart Park Development Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the University of Manitoba, he was charged with the establishment of the infrastructure for the University’s research park. Currently, he is the President of NEXUS Manitoba - a management consulting firm specializing in technology-driven economic development, especially as it pertains to innovation, technology transfer and commercialization, incubators and research parks. Key clients include the Manitoba Institute of Child Health, TRLabs, and Red River College.
Raised on the family farm near Elkhorn, Manitoba he has spent his professional career following graduation from the University of Manitoba as an agricultural engineer (B.Sc. power-and-machinery major - 1977, M.Sc. thesis - Computer-Aided Coordinate Measurement for Quality Assurance - 1983) working with Manitoba industry - especially the small- and medium-sized enterprises - as well as academe. He has built a national and international network of contacts due to his participation in numerous provincial and national consultations, working groups and committees concerning entrepreneurship, the environment, biotechnology, innovation, technology transfer and commercialization, and science and technology policy; and has also participated in international business delegations, trade missions, and projects in Western and Eastern Europe, Central America and Asia concerning agricultural equipment, manufacturing, telecommunications, precision farming, technology transfer and commercialization, and winter cities.
He is an active volunteer in professional and community circles, and among other activities is a Member of Revenue Canada’s Advisory Committee on Scientific Research and Experimental Development, a Board Member of the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance, a Director of Diaspec Holdings Inc., Chair of the Board of the Westlink Innovation Network, a Member of the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ Advisory Committee a Member of the ISIS Canada Technology Transfer Committee, and President of Rugby Manitoba.
A 1991 alumni of the Governor General’s Canadian Study Conference, he was recognized by the Canadian Society of Agricultural Engineering’s Young Agricultural Engineer of the Year (1994) for his “outstanding contribution to technology transfer and diffusion which have led to closer cooperation between government, industry and academic communities”.
