Dr. Alaa Elwi is a Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, University of Alberta, 1980; an M.Sc. in Civil Engineering, University of Alberta, 1977; and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, Cairo University, 1973.

His research interests are: stability of thin walled steel structures; behavior of nonlinear reinforced concrete plates and columns; behavior of reinforced masonry structures; and rehabilitation of masonry structures using fibre reinforced polymers.

He is a member of the American Concrete Institute; ACI Committee 441, Reinforced Concrete Columns; ASCE/ACI Joint Committee 447, Finite Element Analysis of Concrete Structures; the American Society of Civil Engineers; the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta; the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, and CSA S304.1, Technical Committee on Masonry Structures. His awards and honours include the ASCE T.Y. Lin 2000 Award.
