Dr. El-Salakawy is the Canada Research Chair Professor in Advanced Composite Materials and Monitoring of Civil Infrastructures in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He carried out his Ph.D. studies and post-doctoral training at the University of Waterloo (1996-2000), and then worked as a Research Professor at the University of Sherbrooke for five years before joining the University of Manitoba. Dr. El-Salakawy’ s research interests are in the field of reinforced concrete structures, particularly the durability, construction, design, field testing and remote monitoring, using fibre optic sensors, of FRP-reinforced concrete structures and parking garages. He has published over 100 research papers in leading journals and international conferences on various aspects of reinforced concrete and composite materials. Dr. El-Salakawy is a registered professional engineer (P. Eng.) in the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. He is an active member of several research centres and professional societies including Research Centre on Concrete Infrastructures (CRIB - FQRNT), Research Centre on Polymers and Composites (CREPEC - FQRNT), ACI and CSCE. He is the co-editor and editorial chair of the 2nd and 3rd International Conference on Durability and Field Applications of FRP Composites for Construction (CDCC-2002 & CDCC-2007) that were held in May 29-31, 2002 (Montreal) and May 22-24, 2007 (Quebec City), respectively. Dr. El-Salakawy has been heavily involved in the design, construction, and monitoring of the first five bridges constructed in Quebec using FRP bars in their concrete deck slabs.
