Dr. Mamdouh El-Badry is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary. He holds a B.Sc. (Honors) (Cairo 1976), an M.Sc. (Calgary 1982) and a Ph.D. (Calgary 1988). He has more than 28 years of industrial, consulting and academic teaching and research experience in the area of structural engineering. Before joining the academic staff at Calgary in 2000, he held academic and administrative positions at Concordia University in Montréal from 1992 to 1999. For the past 22 years he has been researching in the following areas:
- Analysis and design for strength and durability of concrete structures
- Use of advanced composite materials in bridges and structures
- Computational modeling of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures
- Dynamic and seismic behavior of bridges
- Computer-aided structural analysis and design
Dr. El-Badry has been a Project Leader with ISIS Canada since 1996. He is also Co-Leader of theme “Deformations” which is part of the Carlton-Calgary NSERC CRD project on monitoring performance of the Confederation Bridge. He has more than 75 publications and 12 computer software programs. He is co-author of a book by Ghali, A., Favre, R. and Elbadry, M., Concrete Structures: Stresses and Deformations, 3rd edition, Spon Press, 2002, 608 pp. Several of his computer programs are now in use by numerous organizations worldwide for analysis, design and performance evaluation of major bridges (including the Confederation Bridge) and other structures. He is co-recipient of the CSCE Pratley Award for best paper in bridge engineering in 2000 and the Honorable Mention of the same award in 1998.
He is member of several engineering societies and technical committees including: the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, CSCE, the American Concrete Institute, ACI; the American Society of Civil Engineers, ASCE; the Prestressed Concrete Institute, PCI; and the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering, IABSE. He serves on the ACI Committee 118 – Use of Computer; ACI-ASCE 343 – Concrete Bridge Design; ACI 435 – Deflection of Concrete Building Structures; ACI 440 – Fiber Reinforced Plastic Reinforcement. He has been Chair of the CSCE Structures Division and member of CSCE-ACMBS technical committee on Advanced Composite Materials for Bridges and Structures. He participated in organizing several national and international conferences and is the Chair of the Fourth International Conference on Advanced Composite Materials in Bridges and Structures, ACMBS-IV, Calgary, Alberta, July 20-23, 2004.
A Professional Engineer in Alberta, Dr. El-Badry has served as consultant on the analysis and design of major heavy industrial projects and building and bridge structures in Canada, U.S.A., Korea, France and Saudi Arabia.
