Mr. Peter Brett was born in England and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Birmingham in 1963. He emigrated to Canada in 1966 and obtained a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1975 and a Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Victoria in 1983.
He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Mr. Brett was appointed Director of Bridge Engineering Branch for the British Columbia Ministry of Transportation & Highways (MoTH) in 1986, and was active in supporting the use of advanced composite materials on highway bridges by funding graduate research projects, sponsoring seminars and providing prototype test sites for a steel-free deck, GFRP wrap for seismic retrofit of columns and sprayed FRP shear strengthening of reinforced concrete channel beams.
From 1981 to 1986 Mr. Brett was Project Engineer for MoTH, responsible for managing the design and construction of the Alex Fraser Bridge which, on completion, was the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world. In 1993 he was Senior Bridge Engineer in Dar es Salaam on ten month secondment to N.D. Lea International to inspect bridges for the United Republic of Tanzania and from 1997 to 2000 he provided technical direction to the Owner’s Bridge Engineer during the design and procurement phases of the Lions’ Gate Bridge rehabilitation project.
As MoTH’s representative on the Alex Fraser and Lions’ Gate bridges, Mr. Brett was the recipient several prestigious awards:

- Gold Medal for Industrial Innovation, Science Council of British Columbia, 1990
- Award of Excellence, Consulting Engineers of British Columbia (CEBC), 2002
- Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence, CEBC, 2002
- Krentz Award, Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, 2002
Mr. Brett’s committee involvement has included:

In January 2003, Mr. Brett retired from the Ministry and formed KRM Consulting Ltd., a company specializing in the management of infrastructure projects.
