Dr. Xiaoyi Bao is a Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Ottawa. Her research interests include development of distributed fibre optics sensors for temperature, strain and vibration measurement, polarization mode dispersion and polarization dependent loss and chromatic dispersion effects on high speed communication systems, laser development and nonlinear effects in fibres. From 1994 to 2000 she was a Professor at the University of New Brunswick. She received the UNB faculty merit award in 1997. She was NSERC Council member from1998-2001. In 2000 she joined the Department of Physics of the University of Ottawa. In 2001 she received the Ontario Premier's Research Excellence Award. In 2002 she become Canada Research Chair in Fibre Optics and Photonics. She received the University of Ottawa Inventor of the Year Award for 2003. She has published over 150 technical papers in journals and refereed conference proceedings.
