Nemkumar Banthia is a Professor of Civil Engineering and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. His main research interests include cement-based and polymer-based fiber reinforced composites, with particular emphasis on testing and standardization, fracture behavior, constitutive modeling, strain-rate effects, and repair performance, areas in which he has edited/co-edited ten volumes, published over 250 technical papers, and holds three international patents.

A professional engineer in the province of B.C., Dr. Banthia serves on technical committees of several professional and code drafting bodies, including the American Concrete Institute where he chairs the committee on fiber reinforced concrete, RILEM where he chairs the technical committee on FRP-Concrete Bond, the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code where he chairs the subcommittee on Durability, and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering where he chairs the Financial Planning and Accountability Committee. Dr. Banthia is also on the Editorial Boards of three International Journals. His honors include: the WG Hislop Award of the American Concrete Institute, Three Best Paper Awards, Science and Technology Agency of Japan Award, Earth Science Systems Research Award from the Structural Faults and Repair Conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Wason Medal of the American Concrete Institute, and the Solution Through Research Award of the Innovation and Science Council of British Columbia. Dr. Banthia is a fellow of the American Concrete Institute, the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Indian Concrete Institute.
