Exceptional Progress
Chair's Message
This was an exceptional year marked by milestones that include redefining research themes and identifying new areas to ensure we continue as leaders; generating new field applications with new and continuing industry partners; and passing with honours a comprehensive assessment of ISIS Canada's past performance against the NCE goals and objectives.
On July 21, 1998, Dr. Thomas Brzustowski, NSERC President and NCE Chair, announced ISIS Canada's funding would be extended to the year 2002. This commitment came after the international Expert Panel, which conducted the mid-term review, declared ISIS to be a world leader and even a source of envy in the global community for its highly successful, multidisciplinary approach to cutting-edge research. Two new research areas - FRP in masonry and timber structures - were deemed by the Panel to be highly innovative with potential for great payoffs.
Since it began only four years ago, ISIS has brought together many sectors of the Canadian infrastructure industry in a notably democratic environment. This altruistic approach to network research has attracted strong Board members who bring the necessary skills, status and contacts required to keep the Network on its progressive path. The continued opportunities for field applications are evidence of success as well as proof of how strongly people believe in the new techniques developed by ISIS Canada. Enthusiasm continues to grow as more and more people are attracted to the Network.
During the past year, the administrative arm of ISIS Canada became a federally incorporated organization. At the same time, decision-makers have taken note of ISIS Canada's projects and researchers by bestowing significant awards such as the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute Harry H. Edwards Award for Industry Advancement, the National Transportation Award of Achievement and the Manitoba Round Table on Sustainability Award of Excellence for Research and Development.
All of this could not have happened without the hardworking team of people who make up the ISIS Network. The progress is truly exceptional.
Donald W. Whitmore, P.Eng.
